Hi people (or person? or maybe just me?). Tom here, guitar player for Genius boots, and manager /member of a (I’m sure) soon to be world famous unrelated Band. I just wanted to take a moment to go on a little rant. Now as they say on TV/Radio, “The views expressed in this editorial may not be the views of the band or there sponsors” (not that we have any). So it’s just me talking. Now on with the story. Some folks have asked me about G.B. entering the X92.9 “Xposure” contest this year. In short, No. A longer explanation is as follows. In my mind X92.2 is a strange beast when it comes to Xposure. Lets kick it off with a small story. A couple of years ago we (Genius Boots) won a contest, a music show case at the Beggar. One of the prizes was to be a chit-chat interview and possibly an “unplugged” live off the floor tune on X92.9. As it turns out we were canceled arbitrarily because “they say” we didn’t play enough gigs and/or we didn’t have a full length CD to shill (take your pick as to the excuse). At the time I was a little miffed but ultimately just of a “whatever” mind set. I can understand wanting to promote someone who is trying to make a living at music over someone who makes the all mighty scratch doing the day job gig and leaves the music for fun. But as far as I could tell they didn’t fill the time with another of the winners… so no Xposure there. Having said that X92.9 was/is still doing more for independent local music exposure than most by a long shot and that was/is cool (even if they were promise breaking caca-poopoo heads). Now on to the contest. The X92.9 Xposure contest though a good idea, has a flaw in my opinion. It’s range of exposure is slim, there is an Xposure sound and I would be stunned and amazed to hear it deviate. Now I know they are an “Alternative” station and that the bands will reflect that, I’m not expecting to see/hear the next Conway Twitty, Morbid Angel, or Ripping Hammer. But “Alternative” is a big broad and hotly debated range of music. As a station they play Cypresshill for example who has been classified as Rap, RnB and even Metal. Is System of a Down alternative, because they do play it. NIN was industrial back in the day, I guess it’s Alternative now. Faith No More & Rage use to fall under variations of the Metal or Hard rock banner once upon a time and they both get played. They also play Punk and have a dedicated show for it, I guess punk is alternative. But I really don’t think that we’ll see any of that kind of gear make it to an Xposure disk. The Calgary Beer Core bands on an Xposure disk, I really don’t see it, they’re not in the mold. Any Cypresshill or Public Enemy type rap, nope not likely. Even lighter or more melodic Metal like my friends in Krank, sorry but I’m not holding my breath. You might be Exposed if you fit with the mold that seems to be cast, and that isn’t nearly as varied as there stations play list would lead you to believe. I admit I could be wrong. This may have changed this year as I have yet to learn who won this year but… Back to the now of 2010, and the Xposure contest for this year. For a radio station that prides them selves on supporting and exposing the Calgary masses to local tallent what the hell is the thought process in dropping the band “winners” count from 5 down to 3? Sure the winners get more coin, but to my thoughts the money (though cool) is not the point. The air time and being played in normal weekday and evening rotation is the good part. Having people hear what Calgary has to offer that’s the good part. I’m not bitching as a local musician “about having a narrowed chance to win”. I’m Bitching as an X92.9 listener, I want to be Xposed to more local bands, not less. GIVE ME MORE! Now back to the “did we enter Xposure this year?” question. As I said, no Genius Boots did not enter X92.9’s Xposure this year, but we did put together a black ops project. Once the Xposure contest winners are announced (even if the project dosen’t win) I’ll post the Name of that project and post the songs we submitted. It is glorious I tells Ya GLORIOUS! Sunday March 14th - at 7:30pm We’re on for a 45min set at the Blind Beggar. Competing for cash and fabulous prizes in a “New music showcase”. Ya we know it’s a Sunday, but it’s early and it’s just a 45min set, so that means we’re playing all our best stuff! So come down & check it out peoples! The CD Release Party was held at the Blind Beggar on Feb 20th, 2010, which has now come and gone. We had a great time with the boys from Krank (Chris, Matt, Andrew & Dwayne). It was a hell of a night and we’re happy to have been a part of it and to have the chance to share the stage & support them. Plug plug… itunes.apple.com

Again thanks to the crew down at the Beggar, we love you folks! You are our home away from home and we love having the chance to hang-out with you.
Thursdays show has come and gone. We had a bit of a pre-show change in the ranks. Rob had some very sad family matters to attend to last second (all our best to you and your family Sir). But the show must go on as they say. So we had a battlefield meeting and ripped apart the set list, and made a quick line shuffle. Tom took up the big red bass for 6 songs & We closed the set with a couple of bass free songs. A Very special G.B. thanks to the following individuals: John C. for playing some jimbay on a couple of tunes, Jay S of The New Black (and CDFF) for putting out the offer to take up Bass for the night, Isaac of The New Black (and CDFF) for the show, the staff and sound crew at Dickens… and of course God Made Me Funky!
